Relinquishment Counseling

The Court may order birth parent relinquishment counseling if an adoptive family is petitioning the court for adoption, where no adoption agency or department of social services has previously been involved. In Colorado , birth parents are mandated to receive counseling before they can relinquish their parental rights. Adoption Options can provide relinquishment counseling usually in one meeting. If the child that is being relinquished is over 12 years old, the child must also have a counseling session, which is mandated by the Court, to address if adoption is the appropriate option for this child. We write a counseling affidavit for the family and one for the child over 12 which are submitted to the Court or attorney in the case.
